CoolSculpting Applicators Explained: Sizes, Compatibility & How to Choose

If you run fat-freezing treatments, the applicator is the part that actually does the work. It's the cup that pulls the fat into a fold, holds it there, and freezes it. The machine controls the temperature and the vacuum. The applicator decides which fat you can treat — and whether the freeze comes out even or patchy. Get the applicator wrong and you either can't grab the fat at all, or you grab too much and freeze the wrong layer. Here's the whole picture on cryolipolysis applicators: sizes, shapes, what treats what, and how to pick compatible replacements without burning money.

What an Applicator Actually Does

Cryolipolysis works by cooling fat cells to a temperature that triggers apoptosis — programmed cell death — while leaving skin and muscle alone. Fat cells start dying around 4°C, so the applicator's cooling plates run colder than that, usually somewhere between -5°C and -11°C. But you can't just press a cold plate against someone's belly. The applicator first has to isolate the fat so the cold hits only the fat layer and not everything around it.

It does this with vacuum suction. The cup draws a fold of skin and fat up into the applicator head, then the cooling panels clamp down on that fold. That's why the cup's size and curvature matter so much. A flat cup can't wrap around a curved flank. A big cup can't grab the thin fat under someone's chin. A cup that's too small for a large abdomen means you're freezing only a fraction of the area and the patient leaves with a weird half-treated result.

Treatment time depends on the cooling technology: older two-plate heads run 45-60 minutes per area, while 360° surround heads finish in 30-40 minutes because they chill the fold from every side at once.

The CoolSculpting Lineup — and What Each Name Treats

Original CoolSculpting (Allergan) built its reputation on a named applicator system, and that naming has become the shorthand most clinic owners use even when their machine isn't a CoolSculpting. It's worth knowing the names because that's what your clients and your competitors actually say:

Applicator Treats Shape Logic
CoolCoreUpper & lower abdomenMid-size curved cup
CoolCurveFlanks, love handles, bra fatNarrow curved cup
CoolMaxLarge abdomenLarge high-volume cup
CoolFitInner thighs, vertical areasLong narrow cup
CoolSmoothOuter thighs, non-pinchable fatFlat plate, no suction
CoolMiniSubmental (chin), small pocketsVery small cup

Here's the thing most suppliers won't spell out: the majority of cryolipolysis machines sold today — especially the Chinese-built systems — don't use those brand names at all. They use a simplified six-model system based on the same size and curvature logic. So when you're buying replacement heads for a Chinese machine, you match by dimensions and contour, not by the CoolSculpting name on the box.

Replacement Applicator Models — Six Options

This is the standard six-model replacement lineup we carry. It maps one-to-one onto the areas above, so you can stock what you actually treat:

Model Dimensions Best For Technology
Wing Mini60×35mmChin, knees, small pockets2-Plate
Wing90×45mmArms, love handles, inner thighs2-Plate
Arct110×55mmAbdomen, flanks360° Surround
Flat Mini80×40mmUpper arms, calves2-Plate
Flat120×60mmAbdomen, back, thighs2-Plate
Wing Plus130×70mmLarge abdomen, buttocks360° Surround

Quick read on the two families: Wing heads are curved for wrapping around contours; Flat heads are flat for broad, relatively even surfaces; Arct and Wing Plus add 360° cooling and are built for the big, deep-fat areas. The “Mini” versions of each are just the same shape shrunk down for small zones.

Which Applicator for Which Body Area

Which cryolipolysis applicator for which body area — Wing, Flat, Arct placement guide

Here's the practical mapping — this is what a technician actually reaches for:

Body Area Reach For
Double chin / submentalWing Mini
Upper armsWing or Flat Mini
Love handles / flanksWing or Arct
Abdomen (upper & lower)Flat, Arct, or Wing Plus
Inner / outer thighsWing or Flat
Back / bra rollsFlat
Buttocks / banana rollWing Plus

One rule to remember: bigger isn't always better. If the cup is too large for the fat fold it's trying to grab, the vacuum can't get a clean seal, the fold slips, and you get an incomplete freeze. Match the cup to the area, not to your ego.

2-Plate vs 360° Surround Cooling

This is the single biggest difference between applicators, and it changes both treatment speed and results:

Feature 2-Plate 360° Surround
Cooling methodTwo panels, opposite sidesFull circumference
Treatment time45-60 min30-40 min
UniformityGoodExcellent — even on all sides
Best forSmall to mid areas, flat contoursLarge, curved, deep fat
ModelsWing Mini, Wing, Flat Mini, FlatArct, Wing Plus

The reason 360° heads are faster isn't marketing — it's physics. A two-plate head chills the fold from two sides and the cold has to conduct through the tissue to meet in the middle. A 360° head attacks from every angle at once, so the fat reaches apoptosis temperature in less time and more evenly. If you're doing a lot of abdomen work, the Arct's 360° coverage is worth the extra cost up front because it saves you 15-20 minutes per session and gives more consistent results.

How to Choose What to Stock First

If you're outfitting a new clinic or replacing worn heads, don't buy one of everything. Here's the stock priority that covers the most ground with the least money:

  • Start with Wing + Flat. Those two cover roughly 70% of all treatments — arms, flanks, abdomen, thighs. They're the workhorses.
  • Add Wing Plus if you get large-body or buttock clients.
  • Add Wing Mini for chin and small-zone work — it's a differentiator a lot of clinics skip, but submental fat freezing sells well.
  • Add Arct if abdomen treatments are your bread and butter and you want the 360° speed advantage.
💡 Stocking rule: buy depth on the two workhorses, not breadth across all six. Two spare Wing heads will save you more downtime than one spare of every model.

Compatibility — Read This Before You Order

Cryolipolysis applicator quick-release mount close-up

This is where most clinics get burned. Replacement applicators use a quick-release mount, and it looks universal — a round bayonet or a clip that snaps in. It's not. Different cryolipolysis machine brands use different mount interfaces, and even heads sold as “universal” don't actually fit every handle. A head that doesn't seat properly will leak vacuum mid-treatment, which means the fold doesn't stay drawn up, the freeze is incomplete, and in the worst case you freeze skin you didn't mean to.

⚠️ Never force a head that doesn't seat cleanly. If it needs pressure to lock, it's the wrong mount. A vacuum leak turns a routine treatment into a safety incident.

Before you order, take a photo of your handle's mounting interface — the connector where the head attaches — and send it to your supplier. A good supplier will confirm which models fit within a couple of hours instead of selling you whatever they have on the shelf. This is also why the same six-model lineup doesn't cross-fit every machine brand; the heads are interchangeable within a compatible system, not across all of them.

When to Replace Applicators

Applicator heads are wear parts, not permanent fixtures. With proper care you'll get 2,000-3,000 treatment cycles out of a head before it needs replacing. Watch for these signs that one is on its way out:

  • Uneven cooling — one side of the fold freezes, the other doesn't. Usually a failing cooling panel.
  • Vacuum leaks — the head can't hold suction, the fold keeps slipping out.
  • Cracked housing — hairline cracks around the mount or the cup rim. Cold and repeated sterilization cycles make plastic brittle.
  • Condensation inside the cup — means a seal has failed and moisture is getting where it shouldn't.

Keep at least one spare of your workhorse heads on hand. An applicator failure with no spare means cancelling the afternoon's appointments — which costs more than the head did.

FAQ

Are these original CoolSculpting parts?

No. These are replacement applicators for cryolipolysis machines — the Chinese-built fat-freezing systems most clinics actually run. They follow the same size and curvature logic as the CoolSculpting lineup, and they're CE and ISO 13485 certified, but they are not manufactured by or for Allergan and won't fit an original CoolSculpting console. If you need original parts, go through Allergan's official channel.

How do I know which size fits my machine?

Match by the dimensions of your current head, not by model name. Measure the cup opening (length × width) and compare it to the six sizes above. Then send a photo of your handle's mount so we can confirm the interface. Two minutes of checking beats a return shipment.

Can I use one applicator for every area?

You can try, and it'll be mediocre. A mid-size Wing can do a lot, but it'll grab too much on a small arm and not enough on a large abdomen. If you're only buying one head to start, a Wing (90×45mm) is the most versatile single choice — it covers arms, flanks, and mid-size thighs reasonably well. But plan to add a Flat and a Mini as volume grows.

What's the difference between a Wing and a Flat head?

Contour. Wing heads are curved to wrap around rounded areas like flanks and arms. Flat heads are flat for broad, even surfaces like the abdomen, back, and outer thighs. The cooling tech is the same; it's the shape of the cup that changes which fat it can grab cleanly.

Do you offer OEM and bulk pricing?

Yes. Custom logo and color are available, with an OEM minimum of 20 units per model. Standard minimum order is one unit. If you're a clinic chain or distributor, ask about volume pricing on the full six-model set.
