💡 How to Choose the Right Filter Wavelength

Each filter blocks light below its cut-off wavelength. Lower wavelengths (420–530 nm) target superficial skin concerns like acne and visible vessels. Mid wavelengths (560–640 nm) work for pigmentation and hair removal. Higher wavelengths (690–755 nm) penetrate deeper for coarse hair and darker skin types. Unsure? Check your handpiece filter slot size and send us a photo — we match it free.

IPL Filter Wavelength — Quick Comparison

Select your wavelength based on treatment indication. All filters are coated optical glass with AR (anti-reflective) coating.

Wavelength Details & Treatment Applications

🟣 420 nm — Acne Treatment

The 420 nm filter isolates blue-violet light that targets Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. Porphyrins produced by acne bacteria absorb this wavelength, generating singlet oxygen that destroys the bacteria. Also reduces sebaceous gland activity.

  • Target: P. acnes bacteria, sebaceous glands
  • Treatment: Active acne, mild inflammatory acne
  • Penetration: Epidermis only (superficial)
  • Typical sessions: 6–8, spaced 1 week apart

🔵 480 nm — Superficial Pigmentation & Wrinkles

The 480 nm filter works at the epidermal level for superficial pigment clearance and fine wrinkle reduction. Absorbed by melanin in the basal layer. Suitable as a gentle “lunchtime” rejuvenation treatment.

  • Target: Epidermal melanin, superficial fine lines
  • Treatment: Freckles, fine wrinkles, skin texture
  • Penetration: Epidermis
  • Typical sessions: 4–6, spaced 3–4 weeks

🟢 530 nm — Vascular Removal

The 530 nm filter targets oxyhemoglobin in blood vessels. Peak absorption of hemoglobin occurs around 530–540 nm, making this the optimal wavelength for treating facial telangiectasia, spider veins, rosacea, and cherry angiomas.

  • Target: Oxyhemoglobin in blood vessels
  • Treatment: Spider veins, rosacea, telangiectasia, cherry angioma
  • Penetration: Upper dermis (vascular plexus)
  • Typical sessions: 3–5, spaced 4 weeks

🟡 560 nm — Skin Rejuvenation ⭐ Most Popular

The most commonly used IPL filter. The 560 nm cut-off balances melanin and hemoglobin absorption with dermal penetration. Stimulates fibroblast activity and collagen remodeling. The go-to filter for general photorejuvenation.

  • Target: Melanin, hemoglobin, dermal fibroblasts
  • Treatment: Skin rejuvenation, pigmentation, fine lines, enlarged pores
  • Penetration: Dermis (~1 mm)
  • Typical sessions: 4–6, spaced 3–4 weeks

🟠 590 nm — Pigmentation & Sun Damage

The 590 nm filter penetrates deeper into the dermis for dermal pigmentation including melasma and solar lentigines. Spares the epidermis more than 560 nm, making it safer for darker or tanned skin.

  • Target: Dermal melanin, melanophages
  • Treatment: Sun spots, age spots, melasma (low fluence), freckles
  • Penetration: Mid-dermis
  • Typical sessions: 4–6, spaced 3–4 weeks

🔴 640 nm — Hair Removal ⭐ Most Popular

The standard filter for IPL hair removal. At 640 nm, melanin absorption in the hair follicle is still strong while epidermal melanin interference is reduced. Best balance of efficacy and safety for skin types I–IV.

  • Target: Melanin in hair bulb and bulge
  • Treatment: Hair removal — all body areas
  • Penetration: Deep dermis (~2–3 mm)
  • Typical sessions: 6–8, spaced 4–6 weeks

🟤 690 nm — Hair Removal (Darker Skin)

The 690 nm filter shifts the spectrum deeper, reducing epidermal melanin absorption. Safer for Fitzpatrick IV–V skin types. Still effective for hair removal but may require slightly higher fluence than 640 nm.

  • Target: Deep follicle melanin, less epidermal risk
  • Treatment: Hair removal for skin types IV–V
  • Penetration: Deep dermis (~3 mm)
  • Typical sessions: 6–8, spaced 4–6 weeks

695 nm — Hair Removal (All Skin Types)

A versatile hair removal filter that balances depth with safety across all Fitzpatrick skin types. Lower melanin interference than 640 nm but higher follicle absorption than 755 nm. Good all-rounder for clinics treating diverse clientele.

  • Target: Hair follicle melanin, all skin types I–VI
  • Treatment: Universal hair removal filter
  • Penetration: Deep dermis (~3 mm)
  • Typical sessions: 6–8, spaced 4–6 weeks

🔴 755 nm — Hair Removal (Dark Skin & Coarse Hair)

The deepest penetrating IPL filter for hair removal. At 755 nm, epidermal melanin absorption is minimal — safest option for Fitzpatrick V–VI skin. Also effective for coarse, deeply rooted hair (beard, pubic, axillary).

  • Target: Deep follicle, coarse terminal hair
  • Treatment: Dark skin (V–VI), coarse hair, beard, bikini
  • Penetration: Deep dermis / subcutaneous (~4 mm)
  • Typical sessions: 6–10, spaced 4–6 weeks

⚠️ Important — Filter Size Matters

IPL filters are not one-size-fits-all. Each handpiece model has a specific filter slot size (common: 15×50 mm, 12×35 mm, 10×40 mm). An incorrectly sized filter will not seat properly — causing light leakage or glass breakage during treatment. Always send a photo of your current filter with dimensions before ordering.

FAQ

Which filter wavelength do I need?
Choose by treatment type: 420 nm for acne, 530 nm for vascular/redness, 560 nm for general skin rejuvenation, 640 nm for hair removal (light skin), 690–755 nm for hair removal (dark skin). Most clinics stock 480/530/560/640 nm as a starter set.
How do I know the correct filter size for my handpiece?
Remove your current filter from the handpiece and measure its length × width (mm). Common sizes: 15×50 mm, 12×35 mm, 10×40 mm. Or send us a photo of the filter next to a ruler — we match it for free.
How often should I replace my IPL filter?
The optical coating typically lasts 50,000–100,000 shots. Replace when you notice: (1) coating peeling or bubbling, (2) discoloration or haze at edges, (3) reduced treatment efficacy at same settings, (4) visible scratches or cracks. Inspect before each treatment day.
Can I use one filter for multiple treatments?
No. Each wavelength targets a specific chromophore. Using a 640 nm hair removal filter for acne will not work — the blue light (420 nm) needed for bacteria destruction is blocked. You need a set of filters to cover different treatments. Most clinics keep 4–6 filters on hand.
How should I clean my IPL filter glass?
Use lens cleaning solution or isopropyl alcohol (70%) with a microfiber cloth. Never use abrasive cleaners, paper towels, or dry wiping — these scratch the AR coating. Clean after each treatment session; replace if gel residue bakes onto the surface.
Aftermarket vs original filter — is there a difference?
Quality aftermarket filters use the same Schott/BK7 glass and dielectric coating process as OEM. The key differentiators are: coating uniformity, cut-off sharpness, and AR coating quality. Our filters are manufactured to the same optical specifications as branded originals at a fraction of the cost.
Do you offer filter sets?
Yes. Common sets: (1) Starter Set — 480/530/560/640 nm (4 pcs), (2) Full Clinic Set — 420/480/530/560/590/640/690/755 nm (8 pcs), (3) Hair Removal Set — 640/690/755 nm (3 pcs). Contact us for set pricing — discounted vs individual purchases.
