If you own an RF microneedling machine, the cartridge you load for each treatment is the single biggest variable in the result. Wrong pin count? Treatment takes too long or the tip doesn’t fit the contour. Wrong needle type? Higher PIH risk or less effective coagulation. Wrong machine type entirely? The cartridge won’t even lock into the handpiece.
Here’s how to match the cartridge to the treatment — every time — plus what to actually check when you’re buying cartridges in bulk.
Step 1: Identify Your Machine Type First
RF microneedling cartridges come in two main ecosystems — and they are not interchangeable. Look at the cartridge socket on your handpiece:
Step 2: Match Pin Count to Treatment Area
Pin count isn’t about “more is better.” It’s about coverage area per pass and treatment precision.
Eye & Small Zones — 10 or 12 Pin
For crow’s feet, under-eye, upper eyelid, lip lines, nasolabial folds, and spot treatment of individual scars. These areas have thin skin, tight contours, and high precision requirements. A smaller pin array puts needles exactly where you want them without hitting surrounding tissue. Depth range: 0.5–2.0mm. 10 Pin = Secret RF-type. 12 Pin = Morpheus8-type.
Face & Neck — 24 or 25 Pin
The main workhorse cartridge. For full face, cheeks, jawline, chin, neck, décolletage, acne scars, and overall skin rejuvenation. Good balance of coverage speed and contour adaptability. This will be the cartridge you order most — plan your inventory accordingly. Depth range: 1.0–3.5mm. 24 Pin = Morpheus8-type. 25 Pin = Secret RF-type.
Body — 40 or 64 Pin
For abdomen, thighs, buttocks, flanks, arms, stretch marks, and skin laxity. Large coverage area per pass — the 64-pin array covers roughly 2.5× the area of a 25-pin tip per stamp. Treatment speed matters on body areas because the surface area is much larger than the face. Depth range: 2.0–4.0mm (up to 8.0mm on M8-type machines). 40 Pin = Morpheus8-type. 64 Pin = Secret RF-type.
Nano Crystal Tip — Universal, Fits Both Systems
Non-invasive crystal tip with RF delivery. No needles penetrate the skin — RF energy is delivered through the crystal surface. For needle-free maintenance sessions, first-time patients nervous about needles, and clients who want zero downtime. Also works as an add-on after a standard microneedling session for surface-level pore tightening and brightening. Fits both Morpheus8-type and Secret RF-type handpieces.
Step 3: Needle Type — The Decision That Affects Safety
All three needle types are available for every pin count. Which you choose depends on the patient’s skin type and the treatment goal.
Step 4: What Actually Separates a Good Cartridge From a Cheap One
Not all cartridges are made equal, even if they look the same in photos. Here’s what to check before you buy in bulk:
- Needle sharpness: Should be electro-polished surgical stainless steel (304 or 316L). A dull needle tears instead of piercing — more bleeding, more pain, slower healing. Ask the supplier for microscope images of the needle tips.
- Insulation coating uniformity: A poorly coated “insulated” needle — with bare spots, thin patches, or flaking — is functionally non-insulated. It puts dark-skin patients at risk of PIH. Good coatings are uniform and smooth under magnification.
- EO sterilization: Each cartridge must be individually sealed and sterilized with ethylene oxide gas. The pouch should have a sterilization indicator strip. If cartridges arrive in a bulk bag with no individual seal, reject the shipment.
- Lock mechanism tolerance: The cartridge should click firmly into the handpiece with zero wobble. A loose cartridge can arc — RF energy jumping from the connector to the needle array — which damages the handpiece and can burn the patient.
- CE / ISO 13485 documentation: If the supplier can’t produce CE certification and ISO 13485 (medical device quality management) documents, walk away. These are table stakes for medical-grade consumables, not optional extras.
Inventory Formula for a New Clinic
If you’re stocking a new RF microneedling machine, here’s a starting inventory based on what real clinics burn through in the first 2–3 months (~100 treatments):
